Nearly 100 Fort Wayne Metals employees gathered to pack 100 Breastie Boxes at its third annual “Pack the Box” event on campus Thursday, Oct. 2. Breastie Boxes, which contain comfort items to help support the emotional support side of a patient’s breast cancer journey, are distributed through Parkview, Dupont, and Lutheran hospitals, Fort Wayne Medical Oncology, and other community  outreach organizations.

“What’s really special about this event is that we can have over 100 people participate,” said Evan Wood, Vice President of People & Strategy at Fort Wayne Metals. “Our owner, Scott Glaze, is big on supporting the community, but he wants people to support with action, not just dollars. It also fits with who we are as a company. Our products often end up in life-improving devices and when you talk about breast cancer, you’re talking about people facing life-challenging and life-altering events. To be able to give back in that way—beyond the products we make—is important to a lot of people.”
To further its support of Breastie Boxes, Fort Wayne Metals also collected employee donations for the organization, encouraging its people to wear pink and jeans for a purpose.
“We are not funded by hospital systems,” said Erica Hyatt, breast cancer survivor and Executive Director and Founder of Breastie Boxes. “Because of partnerships with businesses like Fort Wayne
Metals, where you pack boxes and collect dollar bills for wearing pink, money stays in Fort Wayne and any woman or man that walks into one of our hospital systems gets a Breastie Box free and clear. That’s something that we’re very proud of—people don’t have to worry about one more thing when they get a breast cancer diagnosis.”

Breastie Boxes, a local nonprofit that began packing boxes in October 2022, has gifted nearly 3,000 boxes and raised more than $500,000 for its cause. Hyatt shared that $45,000 of those dollars have been the result of corporate box-packing events like the one that Fort Wayne Metals proudly jumpstarted in 2023. Breastie Boxes distributes approximately 100 boxes to breast cancer patients in the community per month.
