More Than 100 Fort Wayne Metals Employees Traded Wire for Hammers in Habitat for Humanity Panel Build
On Thursday, Sept. 11, more than 100 employees traded the hum of wiredrawing machines for an hour for hammers as they rolled up their sleeves to construct wall panels for two new Habitat for Humanity homes for families in Fort Wayne. This was the sixth on-site panel build hosted by Fort Wayne Metals, the tenth house constructed, and the third year in a row the company doubled its impact by building panels for two homes in a single day rather than one. Since 2020, employees have built panels for ten Habitat homes, contributing hundreds of paid volunteer hours to support local families in need of affordable housing. Three years ago, the company realized their employees worked so efficiently they could accomplish double in one day and increased the donation to match the sweat equity.
“Inside the walls of Fort Wayne Metals facilities around the world, the work we do every day improves people’s lives through material innovation,” said Taylor Monaco, Corporate Communications Manager at Fort Wayne Metals. “Taking that outside into our parking lot and building the walls of a home for a family in our community for a day is another way our employees get to live out that purpose-driven work. It’s work that matters, both in the plant and in our neighborhoods.”
Employees participated in four one-hour panel building sessions throughout the day, stepping away from their desks and production to pick up hammers, lift walls, and contribute to something bigger than themselves. It’s being provided with these opportunities to give back that make Fort Wayne Metals a great place to work.
The day’s efforts, guided by the Habitat for Humanity construction team, resulted in the panels for two four-bedroom, two-bath homes that will be move-in ready by the end of the 2025-26 Habitat build season next April.
“Partnerships like this don’t just raise walls — they raise hope,” said Christine Lyons, Gifts Manager for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne. “When companies like Fort Wayne Metals create hands-on opportunities for employees, the impact is more than financial. Employees walk away knowing they helped build stability and a future for their neighbors.”
