Production Part Approval Process

Whether you're ordering a prototype or a full production part, the information provided by the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) assists you in your design, manufacturing process, and end application.

We offer two Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) packages that are designed to provide key testing specific to your application with the convenience of a standard package. Please note that in order to streamline the process and send your results to you faster, tests are not itemized and the packages are not customizable. These packages do not cover the cost of manufacturing the material on which these services are performed - your prototype or production order is separate from the cost of either PPAP package.

Package 1: Basic PPAP

If you require only basic testing, we've got you covered. Our Basic PPAP package offers a solution to your needs without going beyond your current testing requirements. The Basic PPAP offers:

  • Certificate of Conformance (C of C) A certification that the product meets specified requirements and/or industry standards
  • Certificate of Analysis (C of A) A certification of product measurement data and information confirming the product meets specifications
  • Mechanical testing The determination of mechanical properties such as tensile or hardness
  • Balloon drawing A method of marking critical characteristics on a print or drawing in order to reference them to critical testing
  • 3-piece (serialized) sample A sample of 3 production parts, numerically serialized, typically associated with an additional dimensional layout report
  • Batch: 100% CTQ Performing a 100% inspection on the "critical to quality" characteristics of a batch
  • First Article Inspection (FAI) A comprehensive dimensional report that compares the results of a production part to that of the intended design specifications

Package 2: Comprehensive PPAP

If you require complete testing for your Production Part Approval Process, we have designed the Comprehensive PPAP package, which meets Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) standards. In addition to the testing offered by the Basic PPAP, this package provides:

  • Process Flow Diagram (PFD) A flowchart designed to illustrate the sequence and interaction of processes and/or equipment in the manufacturing of a product
  • Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) A method of reviewing all possible process risks, assessing those risks, and listing the actions needed to mitigate risk
  • Control plan A detailed outline of each process step, critical control points, requirements, and control details
  • Measurement Systems Analysis Also known as a "Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility Study" (GR&R), this is a determination of how reliable a measurement method or device can be for a given application to distinguish part-from-part
  • Dimensional results A summary of the dimensional measurements performed on critical characteristics identified from the balloon drawing. Follows the AS/EN/SJAC 9102 Rev A standard
  • Material/special process validation reports A provision of any applicable validation or verification work that must be performed for a new process or product, to determine how well the process can meet specified requirements
  • Initial process capability studies A statistical determination of the capability of a process output to meet customer requirements
  • Qualified lab documents Specialized Metlab or outside lab testing that may be required, such as bio-testing or chemical analysis
  • Checking aids A determination and recording of the gaging and tooling used to complete measurements on critical characteristics, including calibration history or records
